Rutgers defensive tackle Eric LeGrand was paralyzed from the neck down after making a tackle during their game against Army. It appears LeGrand will remain hospitalized for the foreseeable future, as he had emergency surgery to stabilize his spine after arriving at the hospital. LeGrand was injured during a violent tackle on a kick off return where his head ducked just before impact, which is similar to the way Buffalo Bills tight end Kevin Everett was injured in 2007. For anyone that thinks college football players should not be compensated outside of a scholarship, I present this case to you. This person may never walk again, and there are going to be hundreds of thousands in medical and rehab bills. These players put their lives and bodies on the line for a scholarship while the school rakes in money from the college football cash cow. This may be an extreme example, but a good example of why these players should be able to make money off of being a college player.
Ohio State goes down to Wisconsin, and Oregon moves into the #1 ranking in college football. Boise State moved up to the #2 spot, while Oklahoma is now ranked #3. It was another wild weekend in college football, and on the Sunday the first official BCS rankings came out. The BCS rankings are a little bit different, they have Oklahoma ranked #1, while Oregon is ranked in the #2 spot, and Boise State is sitting in the #3 position. Now is the part where college football starts to get crazy the BCS rankings will differ a bit from the AP and coaches polls, and the question remains will Boise State have a strong enough schedule to move into the top two spots? A lot of good things have happened to help Boise State’s chances of getting in the title game, but it’s a long season before things sort themselves out. All of this is intriguing and all, but a playoff would eliminate the need for all of this foolishness.
The Rangers and Yankees have their ALCS series tied at 1 – 1, while the NLCS is tied at 1 – 1 as well. The matchup between Roy Halladay and Tim Lincecum did not disappoint although, both of them gave up more runs than anticipated. The Rangers have pounded Yankee pitching, and had it not been for a miracle come back in game one the Yankees would be down two games to none. What was thought to be a disadvantage at the beginning of the series with Cliff Lee being forced to start game three, now it looks like it may help the Rangers steal a game in Yankee stadium. Who would you rather have pitching on the road in an important game? As for the Giants and Phillies series, it will be difficult for the Giants to overcome the hired guns in the Phillies pitching rotation. The near no hitter thrown by Roy Oswalt in game 2 in route to a 6 – 1 victory shows exactly what money can buy.
Brett Favre is slated to meet with the NFL on Tuesday to discuss allegations about the proposed dirty pictures to Jenn Sterger through her cell phone. Favre does not seem to be concerned as he says he is only concerned about the next game. The fact is that Sterger seems to be waffling on whether she is going to help the NFL in the investigation means that all of this can be much to do about nothing, and of course it brought up the rumors that maybe Favre made a big cash payment to buy her silence. Who knows how true that is, but one thing is for sure the man’s on the voice mails left on Sterger’s phone sound just like Brett Favre. That probably explains why Favre has as of yet to say anything to the media about his guilt or innocence.
It seems that no one is paying much attention to boxing these days; the sport is suffering through a lack of star power outside of a select few. Nonetheless, Vitali Klitschko beat the living daylights out of Shannon Briggs on Saturday night winning in a unanimous decision. Briggs was beaten so badly he is in the intensive care unit at a hospital in Hamburg, Germany with a broken orbital bone, broken nose, and torn left bicep. To Briggs’ credit he never was knocked down in the fight, and he last all twelve rounds. But the very end of the fight turned into a blood bath as Briggs refused to give up, and he paid for it in the end. Klitschko is a good champion who hardly anyone knows about in the United States because he is not American, and with the international flavor of most of the title holders boxing is in an uncertain place right now.
