Pacquiao Versus Margarito Conflict Over Hydroxycut, Shows Reasons The Mayweather Fight Is Dead.

Sports Session November 18, 2010 1

Manny Pacquiao and Antonio Margarito fought this past Saturday, and it turned into a slaughter as Pacquiao pummeled Margarito for twelve rounds.  Manny is now considered by many to be the best pound for pound fighter in boxing today, but of course all of that is dependent on if he ever fights Floyd Mayweather Jr.  That fight will only happen if Floyd clears himself of the chargers that are pending against him for allegedly beating up his ex-girlfriend.

One storyline that came out of the Pacquiao versus Margarito fight was the altercation that happened between the two camps before the fight started.  Margarito was seen before the fight drinking something that appeared to be Coffee, and his trainer ripped on two or three packets and poured them into whatever he was drinking.  The whole thing looked odd to begin with, why were cameras watching Margarito drinking Coffee and the trainer pouring things into it?  Was it really necessary for people to enjoy the fight?

What was the most interesting part is the fact that Pacquiao’s camp called fight officials together along with Margarito’s camp, and accused Margarito of “taking a banned substance”.  The whole thing took place in some back locker room of the Dallas Cowboys stadium where the fight took place, and looked just like a scene out of WWE.  Then we find out that the banned substance Pacquiao’s camp is so furious over is basically Hydroxycut, or a substance in it called Ephedra.

Ephedra is basically a diet supplement that helps with weight loss, and it was banned because of it’s links to heart damage.  The only possible benefit Ephedra could provide to a fighter is maybe a bit more endurance in the fight if that is what he was taking.  Ephedra is not illegal and you can buy it in many products from thousands of drug stores around the country, so the notion that it was going to give Margarito some sort of edge over Pacquiao was dumb.

The madness did not stop there.  We all know that part of the reason Manny Pacquiao and Floyd Mayweather Jr. have not fought yet is because neither of them could come to an agreement on a drug test.  Floyd Mayweather Jr. has not minced words in his belief that Manny Pacquiao is taking some sort of performance enhancing substances, and he wanted random drug testing to be a part of the fight contract.  Pacquiao’s camp initially scoffed claiming Manny was afraid of needles, and eventually reneged on that statement when it was questioned.

They then agreed on testing up to two weeks before the fight, but Mayweather having already agreed to a $1,000,000 fine per pound he was overweight wanted random drug testing anytime up until the fight started.  That is where the fight negotiations broke down because Pacquiao’s camp claimed that Manny felt blood being drawn so close to the fight made him weak.

Fast forward to last Saturday night, and the spectacle that was taking place in the bowels of Cowboys stadium where Pacquiao’s camp demanded Margarito be tested for PED’s.  Okay, but here is the clincher as Pacquiao’s camp agreed to Manny taking a drug test mere hours before the fight, but Margarito’s camp scoffed and boxing officials felt the post-fight test would reveal any PED’s.

Talk about hypocritical, Pacquiao’s camp would not make the fight of the century with Floyd Mayweather because of some bull crap reason about a boxer being scared of needles, but yet they suggest in before the fight with Margarito?  Something does not smell right here, why would Pacquiao avoid fighting Floyd over something so trivial, but offer it up when he was about to pummel Margarito?  It gives the impression that he may be scared to fight Floyd rather than the perception that Mayweather is scared to fight him.  Let me say this Pacquiao himself will fight anyone, he just wants to box and prove he is one of the best pound for pound fighters ever.  The people in his camp are the ones who have hand-picked his fights and negotiated the terms, so maybe they felt that fighting Mayweather was too much of a risk despite the huge payday.

It seems highly unlikely that Mayweather Jr. and Pacquiao will ever get a chance to face off in the ring, but if you look at everything objectively with what happened Saturday night Mayweather Jr. actually looks like he was the one who really wanted the fight.  He has said all along that if Pacquiao’s camp agrees to random drug testing any time before the fight starts then it would be a done deal, so why has Pacquiao’s camp not agreed to it especially after being so willing to do so against Antonio Margarito?  It just makes you wonder what is really going on behind the scenes, and do Pacquiao’s handlers really want him to fight Floyd Mayweather Jr. for the title of best pound for pound fighter ever.

Well you said it yourself. I don’t think Pacquiao or his camp is “afraid” to fight Mayweather, but unlike the other fighters the camp has “hand-picked” for Pacman Mayweather is not a sure win. If he lost that would affect future paydays. Think about the paydays the Pacquiao camp have milked out by not fighting Mayweather. He’s way more exciting than Mayweather so of course he’s going to get more viewers. Once the milk runs dry and people stop paying for the Pacman pummeling sessions I’m sure Pacman vs. Money will happen. Till then it’s the Manny show.
