The Paul Williams versus Sergio Martinez fight happened on Saturday night. This was a highly anticipated fight as their first brawl was an exciting battle between two warriors ending in a decision.
Everyone hoped the rematch would be on par with the first fight, which Williams won in a close decision. Well this time Martinez knocked Williams out with a devastating left hook in the second round that put Williams on the canvas for several minutes. It was a shocking moment as no one expected a second round knockout, but it happened and Martinez will now search for a big fight. The problem is there are not many out there for him because he is not well known although is currently holds a championship belt. He is hoping for a Pacquiao or Mayweather fight, but it is highly unlikely any of them will get in the ring with Martinez, he is bigger than those fighters and it would not be worth the risk for them.
Quinton “Rampage” Jackson edged out a decision over Lyoto Machida at UFC 123. Jackson was awarded a split-decision victory against Machida after raising his opponent’s hand. Jackson having won the first two rounds was pummeled by Machida in the third round, and he thought he may have lost the fight. Jackson wanted to prove he still had something after leaving the UFC for a while to shoot a movie, and although this performance was not stellar it was a good win over a former champion. We will see what this win does for Jackson who is out to prove he can be a champion again, but it’s going to take a better performance than the one at UFC 123 to make that happen.
The Tennessee Titans have a big problem on their hands named Vince Young. In a tough game against the Redskins Titans fans booed Young throughout the game, and it cause the quarterback to heckle the fans to keep up the booing. Then young tore a tendon in his thumb and was removed from the game, but he came back out later and wanted to go back in. The training staff and head coach Jeff Fisher felt that young could not control his passes, so they left him on the bench because of the injury. Well Young did not like that and allegedly threw his shoulder pads and helmet into the stands at heckling fans, and then walked out of the post-game team meeting after a shouting match with Jeff Fisher. In his post-game comments Fisher seemed to imply that Young was no longer the Titans starting QB injury or no injury, but young tweeted later that things were fine between him and the team. It seems Vince Young’s days in Tennessee might be numbered because this is yet another incident that has turned ugly for the former Texas standout.
Richard Seymour went Chris Brown on Ben Roethlisberger after a Pittsburgh touchdown. Seymour was ejected for an openhanded punch to Ben Roethlisberger’s face as the Steelers quarterback was celebrating a touchdown pass. After completing the 22-yard throw to Emmanuel Sanders, Roethlisberger jumped into the arms of tackle Flozell Adams. Roethlisberger then began walking forward and appeared to say something to Seymour, who turned and struck the quarterback in the jaw with his open right hand. It looks like Seymour was taking a page from his New England Patriots days by not putting up with any trash talk from anyone, and clocking Big Ben was a valiant move. Too bad it got him ejected, and he will surely be receiving a fine from the NFL offices on Tuesday when the tapes are reviewed. I bet Big Ben will think twice before he does something like that again.
Jimmie Johnson takes his fifth consecutive Nascar Sprint cup title. There was a three way race for the championship coming into the last race between Johnson, Harvick, and Hamlin with all of them being separated by less than 100 points. Harvick and Hamlin made crucial mistakes in the race while Johnson ran a clean race, and finished off his comeback to become champion for the fifth straight time. It is an epic achievement in sports, and won’t get the due it deserves because Nascar is still not up there with the NFL and NBA in terms of popularity. Johnson’s win may actually hurt the sport a little bit, no one wants to see the same guy winning over and over the fans get bored with that. But, with all that being said Johnson is champion again regardless of what it may affect on the sport.
