The Boston Celtics defeated the Miami Heat for the third time this season. With an 85 – 82 victory over the Heat Boston has set the trend that Miami will have to go through them if they have any hopes of winning the Eastern Conference and getting to the NBA Finals. Kevin Garnett got into another on court altercation, and this seems like it’s turning into one of the NBA’s best rivalries. The Celtics are one of a few teams that have the personnel to exploit the Heat’s biggest weakness, size and toughness inside the paint. Lebron missed a key free throw at the end of the game, and Mike Miller failed to hit the game tying three pointer it’s not like the Heat didn’t have their chances.
The Orlando Magic continue their success against the Los Angeles Lakers beating them handily 89 – 75. Dwight Howard had a double- double, by posting 31 points and 13 rebounds. The Lakers did not shoot well from the field and looked out of sync on offense the entire night, and the Magic took full advantage even when the Lakers made a run Orlando put the game out of reach each time. The Magic are still waiting on Gilbert Arenas to return to his old form, because he is the key to this trade and the Magic’s title hopes. The Lakers are not worried about the regular season for the most part as long as they get it together in the playoffs, the Magic have to get the fourth seed to have home court advantage in at least one series.
Brazilian soccer great Ronaldo is set to announce his retirement on Monday. Ronald is the three-time FIFA player of the year, and was currently playing club ball for Corinthians in Brazil. Fans were visibly upset as they trashed player’s vehicles and threw rocks at the team bus, which seemed to be the last straw for the Brazilian soccer great. Ronaldo will retire as the all-time world cup scoring leader after a fantastic 18-year career.
The nations #1 football recruit Jadeveon Clowney has yet to decide where he is going to play college football. Allegedly Clowney will make that decision sometime this week, but rumors have surfaced the his classroom performance while attending South Pointe High School in Rock Hill, South Carolina was poor enough that he may not meet the minimum academic standard required by the NCAA. Clowney is a wanted man as he has the likes of Nick Saban, Les Miles, and other high profile college coaches calling his cell phone which he sends to voicemail on more than one occasion. Hopefully the news of Clowney and his academic struggles are just rumors and are not based in fact, we will see where he lands.
The once invincible Fedor Emelianenko was pummeled by Antonio Silva in the main event of Strikeforce GP. Emelianenko showed no signs of fear or hesitation after his last fight, which was a loss to Fabricio Werdum. He came out and started taking the fight to Silva and avoiding takedowns from him, but eventually Silva was able to get Emelianenko on the ground and for over five minutes kept him there. Somehow Emelianenko survived, but upon returning to his corner the ringside doctor stopped the fight as his face and eye was swollen shut. After the first the once invincible champion hinted at retirement, and that maybe that was a sign he needs to hang it up. He was one of the greatest champions in MMA, and if that was his last fight it wasn’t a flattering way to go out.
