More than three years after the all-time home run leader was charged with lying to a grand jury when he denied knowingly using performance-enhancing drugs, his trial got under way in San Francisco federal court. The judge and lawyers were attempting to winnow about 100 prospective jurors into 12 jurors and four alternates for a case that could take up to four weeks. Prosecutors wanted to include negative voicemails Bonds supposedly left on the voicemail of his mistress, as some sort of indicator that he had “roid rage”. The judge saw that as not worthy of being included in the proceedings because angry voicemails are far from an indicator of steroid usage.
Notre Dame wide receiver Michael Floyd was arrested over the weekend on suspicion of drunken driving, his second alcohol-related offense in little more than a year. Floyd was booked into the county jail in South Bend at 4:06 a.m. Sunday and was released about seven hours later on $500 bond, St. Joseph County Sheriff’s Sgt. William Redman said Monday. He said he didn’t have any details about the arrest because it was handled by campus police. It is unclear how this will affect Floyd going into next season, but luckily for him he did not decide to enter the NFL draft and has an entire year to recover from this mistake.
Tennessee has fired Bruce Pearl after a season that saw the coach charged with unethical conduct for lying to NCAA investigators during a probe into recruiting. This should come as no surprise to anyone after the athletic director at the University of Tennessee was non-committal this week when asked about the future of the program, and that didn’t bode well for Pearl. Not to mention that the Volunteers exited the NCAA Tournament in the first round with an embarrassing loss by 30 points to the Michigan Wolverines. Pearl is probably considered tainted goods when it comes to head coaching jobs in College Basketball, which is a shame because he is a good coach.
The first weekend of the NCAA tournament was probably the best ever, there were a ton of upsets and many of the games came down to the wire. There were actually very few blow out games in the tournaments first weekend, which shows just how much parity there is in college basketball these days. The Sweet 16 consists of Ohio State, Kentucky, Marquette, UNC, Duke, Arizona, UConn, San Diego St., Kansas, Richmond, VCU, Florida State, Butler, Wisconsin, BYU, and Florida. One of the themes ins this tournament has been the fact that the Big East was able to get 11 teams into the tournament, and after the first weekend the Big East only has two teams left. Does that mean the Big East is overrated as a conference? Of course not, and if you think about it banging around for 18 games in the Big East, and then playing a grueling conference tournament may actually hurt their teams more come tournament time. We will see what this tournament holds in store next
