Hall of Fail Honoree: J.R. Smith Saw “Nothing but Net”

Today’s Hall of Fail Honoree is none other than J.R. Smith from the Denver Nuggets. Mr. Smith is one of the best sixth men in the NBA coming off the bench to give the Nuggets a spark, but in a recent game against the Sacramento Kings Mr. Smith lost a bit of focus on the court.
To give you a background when a basket is made in the NBA the opposing team takes the ball out of bounds and throws it back into play in order to start their offensive possession. This is known as “taking the ball out”, that way teams can alternate possessions when one of the teams makes a basket.
Well on this night J.R. Smith apparently decided to be generous. Sacramento guard Tyreke Evans 3-point shot grazed the outside of the net, and did not actually go in the basket. Smith thinking that the shot when in and Evans had hit “nothing but net” takes the ball out and throws it in to a teammate.
The referee blows the whistle on Smith because the ball did not go in the basket and Smith grabbed it and stepped out of bounds, thus turning the ball over to Sacramento. But in this case Smith was lucky when the ball missed the rim, it landed out of bounds before he touched it so the Nuggets were able to retain the possession.
So, J.R. Smith was saved from a “complete” fail, but it is still a classic blunder that is unforgivable. It is basic basketball to make sure the ball goes through the hoop before you take it out, and J.R. Smith you failed miserably at that this time.
It is for that reason that I bestow the honor of inducting J.R. Smith in the the Hall of Fail. J.R. Welcome to the Hall!!! Check out the infamous video below:
