Can Quinton “Rampage” Jackson Avoid Underestimating Matt Hamill At UFC 130?

Sports Session May 26, 2011 0

UFC 130 is coming up on Saturday, and former light heavyweight champion Quinton “Rampage” Jackson (31-8) takes on Matt “The Hammer” Hamill (10-2).  Rampage comes into this fight after winning a controversial split decision over former light heavyweight champion, Lyoto Machida.  Rampage previously lost a unanimous decision to former light heavyweight champion, Rashad Evans, in what was a No. 1 contender fight at the time.

Matt Hamill is known for his wrestling and lately he has displayed surprising power in his hands and kicks.  He knocked out Mark Munoz with a devastating head kick that was worth of being put on a poster, and half of his wins have come by way of knockout.  Hamill is one of those guys that you don’t necessarily fear when you first look at him, but once he is inside the Octagon he will make you regret underestimating him.

In a recent documentary leading up to the fight Rampage talked about how Matt Hamill told reporters that he is going to break Rampage’s will in the fight.  Hamill was under the impression that Rampage was underestimating him because he is considered a step down from all of Rampage’s recent opponents.  Rampage responded by saying that he was lagging in camp a bit, because he was not as motivated to fight Hamill.  He then said that Hamill’s comments injected some motivation in him, and on the documentary you can see that Rampage was focusing on his cardio more than he ever had before.

Rampage has commented in the past that he wants to fight until he is 35 years old, but his desire to get back to the top and wear the light heavy weight belt again my push him past that.  As for the fight on Saturday night, Rampage has the power to knock Hamill out, but as good of a wrestler as Rampage is Hamill is a bit more seasoned.

It’s going to be Rampage’s experience in the ring and ability to survive and scrap with anyone that will win this fight for him.  Hamill does have enough to win the fight if Rampage does not come out aggressive (see the Forrest Griffin fight).  There should not be any conditioning issues for Rampage this time, and if that is the case it is going to be difficult for Matt Hamill to put Rampage in the tough spots he needs to in order to win the fight.  There is a lot riding on the fight for Rampage Jackson, if he loses then he will have a tall order to get another shot at the title in the next few years.
