Donovan McNabb Traded To The Vikings, Can He Still Be An Elite QB?

Sports Session July 27, 2011 0

Donovan McNabb has had the worst two years of his career when it comes to Ego, especially after he was benched last season for Rex Grossman.  Well Mike Shanhan and him parting ways now, maybe Donovan can get things on track.  The Minnesota Vikings have agreed to a trade that will send Redskins QB Donovan McNabb to the Vikings for an undisclosed draft pick.

The move is not a surprise since the Redskins have made it public that they were parting ways with veteran QB.  McNabb had a down year in 2010.  He completed 58.3% of his passes for 3,377 yards, 14 TD’s and 15 interceptions.  That was good for a 77.1 QB Rating which was near the bottom of the league for starting quarterbacks.

Despite that, the 34 year old veteran is a significant improvement over the Vikings other QB options.  They drafted Florida State quarterback Christian Ponder in the first round this past spring.  He is certainly going to be the starter some time down the road.  It now appears that it will not have to be this year though.  That is big for the Vikings who have a lot of talent across the board.

They could lose wide receiver Sidney Rice in free agency, but with Adrian Peterson putting the offense on his back, McNabb is still going into a pretty good situation.  Overall they are still probably not as good as the Packers and don’t have that good of a chance at winning the NFC North.  Despite that, they should now be able to compete with Detroit Lions and Chicago Bears for 2nd and maybe even a Wild Card spot.

McNabb has already agreed to restructure his contract to make it more friendly for the Vikings salary cap, and a lot of critics still think this is a bad move for the Vikings because of McNabb’s recent struggles.  The truth is if McNabb is in the right system then he should have no problem being a good quarterback in this league, and is definitely an upgrade of Christian Ponder and Sage Rosenfels.  We will see if he can take the Vikings to the promised land and beyond.
