At some point everyone will remember where they were on 8/1/2011, that day is the day that Randy Moss hung up his cleats and retired from the NFL. After 13 seasons in the league as one of the most dynamic, exciting, and polarizing players it is finally over, and the worst part is he went out with probably one of the worst endings ever. If you were talking to someone around 2007 about “the freak”, and
you told them in the last year of his career he would play for three different teams and be cut by one of them. The other person probably would have looked at you, and told you that you were crazy, but that is actually what happened.
Randy Moss ends his career after what many can easily see as him hitting rock bottom, probably the worst season of his hall of fame campaign by far. He was traded from the New England Patriots to the Minnesota Vikings where he was finally able to play with Brett Favre, and that last a few weeks until he was cut by Brad Childress. Moss was picked up by the Tennessee Titans and finished out the season as an invisible man, many thought Moss would come back this season to redeem himself, but he chose to retire instead.
Here are a few statistics to sum up Randy Moss’s career:
- Set Record for most receiving TD’s in a season with 23 (2007)
- Tied for second with (Terrell Owens) hauling in 153 touchdown passes over his career (Jerry Rice – 197)
- Fifth all-time in receiving yards with 14,858
- Eighth in receptions with 954
Those stats are fairly impressive to be honest, and it is the reason that Randy Moss is going to be a hall of famer. There are a lot of people who think Moss is not done, and that if he gets a call from contending team that needs a wide receiver he will take the opportunity to get back on the field. I think Moss is done at this point, he has been good with his money and had several offers to play during free agency. I think his heart isn’t in it anymore, and knowing that New England probably would not be calling for his services again there were very few places he feels are the right situation for him.
Moss is in the twilight of his career, and the right situation for him is one where he has a chance to win a super bowl. He would also want to have an elite quarterback throwing the ball to him, and you would need a strong locker room for him to fit into. There are only a handful of teams that fit that mold, and most of them are already set at the wide receiver position. Is this the last we have seen of the man people dubbed “the freak” only time will tell, but the way he ended last season makes it quite obvious that his heart wasn’t in it, which means it’s time for a player to do something else.
