Sports Session Weekly Recap

Welcome to a soon to be revamped section of The Sports Session formally known as the Tuesday morning Sports Session, we are working on a new name and should have one soon.  The section was changed, so that these updates would not be limited to Tuesday mornings only, now we can give summary updates on any day of the week.  Plus the Tuesday morning format worked great for Football since it is mostly played on a few specific days, to cover other sports we need a bit more flexibility.

What in the world was Greg Oden thinking, he took nude pictures of himself for a “lady friend” over a year ago.  But inevitably he stopped talking to said “lady friend”, so she cashed in sold the pictures and they wound up on the internet for everyone to see.  I know Oden is young, but the guy had to see all the sex tapes that have ended up on the Internet in recent years.  How could he make such a stupid mistake, luckily for him it was only pictures and not a video tape.  Here is his response to the incident:

“First, I would like to apologize to everybody, Portland, fans, the organization,” he told reporters before taking questions. “It was very embarrassing. It was something that happened over a year and a half ago. It was taken and sent over a year and a half ago. I’m very sorry and I’m definitely embarrassed for my family and everybody around me.”

Let’s hope that Oden has learned his lesson from all of this he took responsibility for it, which is good.

The Kentucky Wildcats were the new number one team in college basketball, and played their first game in defense of that ranking tonight against South Carolina.  Well the Wildcats came up short, losing 68 – 62 to a game South Carolina team led by Devan Downey who scored 30 points on the night.  Wildcats coach John Calipari said, ”This is what happens when you have young guys who think we’re are going to win at the last minutes of the game”, he was absolutely correct the Wildcats played like they knew a last minute victory was a sure thing.  This time all of their heroic efforts came up short, and they took their first loss of the season.  I believe the Wildcats were drinking to much of their own Kool-Aid, after getting a call and having a conversation with president Barak Obama.  They have a young team, and they learned their first lesson about expectations and handling prosperity, many still believe that Kansas is still the best team in the country, and after this stumble by the Wildcats they just may reclaim the top spot.

Gilbert Arenas is in hot water, David Stern is pondering his final punishment and the words “lifetime ban” have been thrown around.  I don’t believe he will get a lifetime ban, and several reports have echoed that sentiment, but it looks like he will be out the rest of this season and more than likely all of next season as well.  I don’t think he would have received such severe punishments had he not pulled the six shooter stunt with his teammates, that was just mocking David Stern for no good reason.  We all know how vindictive David Stern can be, and any attempt to make him look bad or mock him for any reason he will generally put his foot up your ass.  I hate David Stern to be honest, but Gilbert Arenas left him no choice in this matter.  Ultimately when the punishment is handed down we know it’s going to be harsh, and the players union will attempt to mitigate the damage here.  I do feel sorry for Gilbert, but at the end of the day he did bring this on himself.

Baseball great Andre Dawson will enter the Baseball Hall of Fame as a Montreal Expo.  He played the first 11 seasons of his major league career with the Expos before joining the Cubs in 1987.  There seems to be much debate over this as the Expos are now defunct and many wonder why he was not sent to the Hall as a Chicago Cub, but from my understanding of all of this the decision lies with Major League Baseball and not the individual player.  I actually agree with him going in as a Montreal Expo because there isn’t much left to even show that Montreal ever had a team, but having a player in the Hall of Fame wearing an Expos uniform will solidify their place in history.  I don’t understand why all of the Cubs fans are up in arms about this, or why people feel the he should not go in as an Expo because the franchise was fairly bad.  Regardless of how the Expos franchise was run when it was in existence that does not eliminate the fact that Major League Baseball once had a team there, the Nationals are not doing much better so Dawson going in as an Expo is a good thing.

The Super Bowl is two weeks away, and we have what appears to be a potential shootout on our hands.  By now you know the teams and the players, so there is no need to revisit those topics.  The important thing here is the fact that the Colts are favored right now, but I believe the Saints are a team of destiny even though they are going against Peyton Manning.  All the events leading up to this point have favored the Saints, the demolishing of Arizona, Minnesota developing the turn over bug, all of those factors have pointed to the fact that this team is just meant to win.  Think about the irony here, they are playing the Super Bowl in Miami where the Saints had probably their biggest comeback of the season against the Miami Dolphins.  I know Peyton Manning is probably the best the league has to offer right now, but for some reason I feel the Saints are going to find a way to win the game.  The Colts aren’t going to turn the ball over like the Vikings did, and they won’t be able to beat up on Manning like they did Warner and Favre, so if they do win it will be all that more amazing.
