The Carolina Panthers have started with a 1 – 5 record this season, and the high hopes coming into the season have dwindled to almost no hope at all. This attitude was on display in a major way when their star quarterback Cam Newton basically imploded in his post game interview with the press. Newton seemed to be frustrated, whiny, and lacked any of the confidence that a man who mimics superman would typically exude. Newton threw his offensive coordinator under the bus by saying that he was, “bored with the same old script, by the same director and Chud needs to call the plays”.
Newton was referring to offensive coordinator Rob Chudzinski by saying that the offense has to be balanced. Newton did put a lot of the blame on himself, but overall that press conference was not the type you get from elite QB’s who are successful in this league. The concerning part is when Newton was asked what they can do to make things better and he basically said he was going to put out a suggestion box for the reporters to give him ideas. That is something you would never hear from Drew Brees, Tom Brady, or Peyton Manning, and Newton has all of the potential from a talent perspective to get where those players are. The problem with Newton is his maturity, and it’s unclear if that is going to change anytime in the near future.
This is a learning process for Newton he has always been on winning teams, and throughout his entire college career he never lost a game. In his two seasons with the Panthers he has had to become used to losing and it’s not something that he is not reacting to very well. Losing is part of sports and when you are the leader of your team you have to stand up and keep your composure no matter what. Cam Newton is going to have a good NFL career, but he still has some maturing to do and for that press conference we are welcoming him to the Hall of Fail!
