Tuesday Morning Sports Session – 12/8/2009

heisman

The five finalists for the Heisman Trophy have been selected, the list includes Texas QB Colt McCoy, Florida QB Tim Tebow, Stanford RB Toby Gerhart, Alabama RB Mark Ingram, and Nebraska DT Ndamukong Suh.  Colt McCoy was the odds on favorite to win it at the start of the season, but since his stats were not as good this season somehow he fell out of that spot despite his teams undefeated record.  Out of that group I think the person that should win it is Ndamukong Suh, he is the most dominant player in college football.  If you look at the Big 12 championship game he had 12 tackles and 4.5 sacks from the defensive tackle position which is unheard of, he harassed McCoy all night and almost won the game single handedly.  But I think Mark Ingram will win because the Heisman has the propensity to give it to offensive players, Tebow shouldn’t be in the conversation his stats were down this year, and the team wasn’t anywhere near as good as last year.  I am basing that off of how they seem to have judged Colt McCoy, and Gerhart yes he has had a good year, but I am not sure why he received so many votes.  Even ahead of Clemson’s C.J. Spiller who I think is a much better player than Gerhart and has come up huge in big games.  Ndamukong for the Heisman!!!

Notre Dame is interviewing Cincinnati’s Brian Kelly this week about the vacant head coaching position, if I was Brian Kelly I would see if Cincinnati is willing to put me in the $3 – $4 million dollar range as a head coach.  He has put them in a BCS game each of the last two seasons, so why shouldn’t they?  Kelly is only going to Notre Dame because of the money and guaranteed five year contract which they have given every coach except Tyrone Willingham.  The expectations at Notre Dame are too high, and Charlie Weis has left a mess in South Bend with Tate and Clausen leaving for the NFL.  If I were Kelly I wouldn’t be to anxious to jump into that situation unless they offered some serious money, but we all know he will more than likely take the job as they are going to throw a decent amount of money at him.

The BCS is a beacon for turmoil, there are five undefeated teams in major college football and the season is now over.  The BCS has put Texas and Alabama in the title game after much speculation that TCU had an outside shot at passing Texas after this weekends action.  Is Texas the most deserving team to face Alabama in the championship game, a lot of pundits say no after Texas narrowly escaped Nebraska in the Big 12 title game.  I don’t think there is any way you can possibly determine who is the most deserving the SEC is not the “power” conference everyone is making it out to be this season.  Florida was dominated by Alabama, but Florida ran over the rest of the SEC that to me says the conference was fairly weak all around this year.  No one is giving Texas a chance to win, but I think the game is going to be closer than people think and if Texas can find a running game between now and the game they might pull of an upset.

Allen Iverson returned to Philadelphia after signing a $600,000 contract with the team.  Iverson came out of his brief retirement after not wanting to play because he was not allowed to start, and did not want to come off the bench.  I think this is a career moment for Iverson not because he is returning to Philadelphia, but because of the emotion and genuine heart felt feelings he showed at the press conference.  He admitted he created a false image of himself and regrets mistakes he has made in his life and career.  Most importantly you can tell the guy wants to be in Philadelphia, he said when his agent told him he had a chance to return “home” Iverson said “How could I say no?”.  A future Hall of Famer took the veteran minimum of $600,000 to come play for the team he loves, after all Iverson has done I think this is one thing that will give him the most boost in his career.

The New Orleans Saints and Indianapolis Colts both went to 12 – 0 this week, the first time in NFL history two teams have accomplished this feat.  The Saints were in a dog fight with the Redskins and had to go to overtime to decide the game, while the Colts handled the Titans easily.  I think the Saints may just be a team of destiny, the Robert Meacheam fumble return for a touchdown after a Brees interception was a fluke play and if they didn’t get that play they don’t score before the half and probably lose.  The ball just bounced their way and the Mike Sellars fumble in over time that setup the game winning field goal was another fortunate play for them as well.  These teams seem to be headed for a meeting in Miami, but a lot can happen between now and then.
