Who in the name of Sam Fuld is Sean Bergenheim?

Indeed, like the unknown Tampa Bay Rays outfielder who so energized the fan base that “The Legend of Sam Fuld” became a twitter sensation, Sean Bergenheim has stunned the hockey world by leading the Tampa Bay Lightning to a shocking four game series sweep of the the top seeded Washington Capitals.

Bergenheim, who managed 14 goals in 80 regular season games, has been simply unbelievable in the playoffs, leading the Lightning with seven goals and one assist in 11 games. He scored twice in Game Four, allowing the Lightning to stake a commanding 3-1 advantage midway through the second period.

Tampa Bay never trailed in the game and when Martin St. Louis scored on an odd man rush with 3:08 left in the third period, a 5-2 lead pretty much iced the game. It would finish 5-3.

The sweep allows Tampa Bay to finally heal up and rest. An extremely physical first round seven game series with Pittsburgh and the first two games of this series left the Lightning a little undermanned.

Despite the injuries to Simon Gagne and Pavel Kubina, Tampa Bay took advantage of the Capitals lapses in concentration. They outfought Washington for loose pucks and they buried their chances when they had their opportunities.

While Bergenheim certainly deserves credit, the Lightning would not have won the series without the tremendous effort from goaltender Dwayne Roloson. Rollie the goalie wasn’t as sharp as he had been earlier in the series but he still made 33 saves on 36 shots and the Caps big three—Ovechkin, Backstrom and Semin were held to just one point (an assist) and 10 shots.

It’s no surprise that the Capitals were serenaded with na na na na, na na na na, hey hey hey, good bye as the final seconds ticked off the clock.

So with Washington put out of its playoff misery, the Lightning await the winner of the Boston-Philadelphia series for the Eastern Conference Finals. The Bruins are up 3 games to 0 but we all know what happened last season when the Philly and Boston met in the playoffs.

Boston won the regular season series with Tampa Bay 3-1 but did not face Dwayne Roloson in any of the four games.

Tampa Bay was 3-0-1 against the Flyers.

Of course, Washington had dominated the regular season series with Tampa Bay but it didn’t do them much good in the playoffs.

If the Lightning can continue to get stellar goal tending from their ancient net minder and scoring depth from all four lines—they will be difficult for any team to beat.

Here are the latest Sports Session NHL Power Rankings (as of games played December 27)

1. Philadelphia Flyers (22-8-5) (Previous Ranking 3): Putting an end to the Penguins win streak last week bumps the Flyers up to the top spot.

2. Pittsburgh Penguins (24-11-2) (1): Sidney Crosby now 25 game point streak. Remember that the Pens have been this good without Jordan Staal all season.

3. Vancouver Canucks (21-8-5) (6): The Canucks are very hot with points in 11 of 12 games.

4. Detroit Red Wings (22-9-4) (2): The Wings have been beat up all season but keep winning. Let’s see how they do without Pavel Datsyuk for about a month.

5. Tampa Bay Lightning (21-10-5) (13): Dan Ellis has been surprisingly good in net. Imagine where they would be with a quality netminder.

6. Chicago Blackhawks (20-14-3) (12): Marian Hossa is back in the lineup and the Hawks offense has been clicking.

7. Dallas Stars (21-11-4) (7): I judged these guys wrong in the preseason. They won’t go away.

8. Los Angeles Kings (21-12-1) (9): Starting to find consistency. Three straight wins and 7-2-1 over last ten.

9. San Jose Sharks (19-11-5) (8): Similar to the Kings, the Sharks on on a hot streak, riding a four game win streak.

10. Washington Capitals (21-12-5) (11): Playing much better after their horrible losing streak, winning three of their last four.

11. Boston Bruins (18-11-4) (5): Starting to slide, but still in good shape overall.

12. New York Rangers (20-14-2) (10): Despite the overall good record, the Blue Shirts are struggling at The Garden with only a 8-8-2 record.

13. Montreal Canadiens (20-14-2) (4): Looking sloppy. Not good because the east looks tough this season.

14. Colorado Avalanche (19-12-4) (18): Hanging in there still and they will slowly start to get healthy.

15. St. Louis Blues (18-12-5) (19): Three straight wins. They also need to get healthy.

16. Phoenix Coyotes (16-11-7) (16): Keep an eye on these guys. They are currently fifth in the Pacific Division, but only two points out of eighth in the west.

17. Atlanta Thrashers (19-13-6) (14): The beginning and middle of December was good for Atlanta. The end, not so good as they close the month with four straight losses.

18. Nashville Predators (17-12-6) (15): Possibly the streakiest team in the NHL. Now riding a four game losing streak.

19. Anaheim Ducks (18-7-4) (20): Only a point out of the playoff picture. They are having problems getting scoring from anyone not named Corey Perry, Bobby Ryan, or Ryan Getzlaf.

20. Carolina Hurricanes (15-15-4) (21): Followed a four game win streak with a current three game losing streak.

21. Florida Panthers (16-7-0) (26): Good defensive team, but lack of offense is killing them.

22. Minnesota Wild (16-14-4) (22): Speaking of lack of offense. The Wild have none.

23. Ottawa Senators (16-17-4) (25): The Sens took a hit with Jason Spezza’s shoulder injury, but Brian Elliott has been surprisingly good in net of late.

24. Columbus Blue Jackets (17-15-3) (17): They don’t just lose games, they get destroyed in them. Way too many blowout losses.

25. Calgary Flames (15-18-3) (28): They can’t play against good teams and the Western Conference has way too many of them.

26. Buffalo Sabres (14-17-4) (24): Is there a more disappointing team in the NHL not named the New Jersey Devils?

27. Edmonton Oilers (12-16-6) (23): Young team with talent, but they have to learn how to win.

28. New York Islanders (9-18-6) (30): The Isles get the bump up from the cellar for riding a three game win streak.

29. Toronto Maple Leafs (13-17-4) (27): There is some good news coming out of Toronto. At least they aren’t the Devils.

30. New Jersey Devils (9-24-2) (29): Will coaching change matter? What took them so long anyway?

Here are this weeks Sports Session NHL Power Rankings (as of games played December 12)

1. Pittsburgh Penguins (21-8-2) (Last Ranking 4): Are you kidding me? The Pens are on an amazing roll, riding a 12 game win streak into this week. Not only that, Sidney Crosby is starting to put a lock on another Hart Trophy. The Pens are getting contributions from everyone at the moment. How long can the streak continue?

2. Detroit Red Wings (19-6-3) (1): Still averaging the most goals per game in the league.

3. Philadelphia Flyers (19-7-5) (3): Huge matchup this week as the Flyers host the Penguins. If anyone can stop the Pens, it very well could be the Flyers.

4. Montreal Canadiens (18-10-2) (6): This team gives it their all for 60 minutes. They will hang around the top of the Eastern Conference all season.

5. Boston Bruins (16-8-4) (11): Boston’s been hot again and have a big game against the Habs this week that could put them in first place in the Northeast Division.

6. Vancouver Canucks (16-8-4) (8): Power play has been lethal, tops in the NHL.

7. Dallas Stars (17-10-2) (13): I keep waiting for these guys to tail off, but they keep winning games.

8. San Jose Sharks (15-10-4) (15): Finally. The Sharks are on a tear, coming off a huge week with wins over Detroit, Philadelphia, and Chicago.

9. Los Angeles Kings (16-10-1) (10): Starting to get back on track after a couple week slump.

10. New York Rangers (18-13-1) (18): The Blue Shirts have started to put things together. Consistency always seems to be a problem though. They need to get hot because now the Knicks are stealing all of their headlines.

11. Washington Capitals (18-11-3) (4): Suddenly things are ugly in the Nation’s Capital. A six game winless streak and the panic button is about to be pushed.

12. Chicago Blackhawks (16-12-3) (5): They are 3-1-1 in their last five, but things aren’t looking that great. Big loss to San Jose last week and a trip to Detroit is awaiting this week.

13. Tampa Bay Lightning (16-10-4) (14): West Coast trip didn’t go all that great, but they did end it with a big overtime victory over Vancouver. Steven Stamkos stays hot, which makes this team worth watching.

14. Atlanta Thrashers (16-11-3) (9): Solid last 6 games, posting a 4-2-0 record. Dustin Byfuglien has been an absolute beast.

15. Nashville Predators. (14-8-6) (22): Very up and down team. They are up again, riding a 5-0-1 streak.

16.Phoenix Coyotes (14-8-6) (7): Haven’t taken advantage of a homestand. Now they have the next six games on the road.

17. Columbus Blue Jackets (16-11-1) (12): Things haven’t gone as well the past few weeks as the Jackets are on a 2-3-1 stretch and have been embarassed a couple of times of late.

18. Colorado Avalanche (15-10-4) (17): Can’t seem to win the close ones of late, going 2-1-3 the last two weeks. Leaving three extra points on the ice could hurt in the long run.

19. St. Louis Blues (14-9-5) (16): Remember when they held the top spot in the rankings for a few weeks. On a 2-2-2 stretch the past six and things won’t get any easier, with games vs. Los Angeles, Detroit, and San Jose this week.

20. Anaheim Ducks (16-13-4) (21): Busy two weeks for the ducks, going 5-2-2. Corey Perry is on a nice tear, putting up a five-point game over the weekend. Defensive breakdowns have continued to haunt this team though.

21. Carolina Hurricanes (12-12-4) (20): Cam Ward is riding another nice streak. That’s about it though.

22. Minnesota Wild (13-12-4) (19): Niklas Backstrom has been talked about as one of the better netminders in the NHL the past few seasons. Not of late though as he’s been awful and as a result, so have the Wild.

23. Edmonton Oilers (11-13-5) (29): I had to give them a nice bump up a few spots after a 4-1-1 start to the month. Rookie Taylor Hall has been a treat to watch. He has a very bright future ahead of him.

24. Buffalo Sabres (12-14-4) (25): There is no truth to the rumor that a search party has been sent out to look for the Sabres offense that finished in the Top 10 in the NHL a season ago. Maybe they should though. The struggling Sabres are sitting 23rd in the league. There is too much talent for so little production.

25. Ottawa Senators (13-16-2) (24): Coach Cory Clouston and Alexei Kovalav got into a little spat this week. Too bad the Sens don’t show that type of fight on the ice.

26. Florida Panthers (13-15-0) (23): If the Panthers could score at all on the power play they might have a few more wins. The NHL’s worst power play has scored only once this month with the man advantage.

27. Toronto Maple Leafs (11-14-5) (28): Three wins in their last five against some good competition. Now comes a tough west coast swing.

28. Calgary Flames (12-15-3) (26): Only two wins in December this month, Sutter should be on the hot seat.

29. New Jersey Devils (8-19-2) (27): Winless in December. Who would have thought? Speaking of hot seats, the Devils need a coaching change. by the way, how’s that Iyla Kovalchuk contract working out? The Devils would be an easy choice for the final spot in the Power Rankings if the Islanders weren’t still in the NHL.

30. New York Islanders (5-17-5) (30): You know the story here. No use kicking them even more while they are down.

Had to take a couple of weeks away from the Power Rankings, but that gives us a real good opportunity to see exactly who is for real and who are pretenders that just got off to a good start. With that being said, let’s take a look at theSports Session NHL Power Rankings after eight weeks of the season. (Rankings as of Nov. 29)

1. Detroit Red Wings (15-4-2) (Last Sports SessionRanking 6): Playing as good as anyone in the NHL. Survived some early injuries, so I expect them to do the same after losing Mike Modano. It shouldn’t be a problem since they are the deepest team in the league.

2. Philadelphia Flyers (15-6-4) (5): Speaking of deep, can anyone match the depth at forward that the Flyers can run out every night. Simple answer. No.

3. Washington Capitals (17-6-2) (4): Exactly what was expected from the Caps. They are on a tear and could easily be ranked No. 1.

4. Pittsburgh Penguins (15-8-2) (18): Huge climb up the ladder for the Pens. Speaking of being on a tear, no team is as hot. Sidney Crosby has taken over the scoring lead and Evgeni Malkin is playing much better. The defense has been the key though as no team is doing a better job on the penalty kill. On a side note, where are all the Marc-Andre Fleury haters now?

5. Chicago Blackhawks (13-11-2) (14): The Cup hangover is officially over in Chicago. The Hawks have got things together and are playing very well.

6. Montreal Canadiens (15-8-1) (12): No one is knocking the decision to stick with Carey Price now. The Habs are allowing only 1.96 goals per game. Tops in the NHL.

7. Phoenix Coyotes (11-6-5) (25): Another team making a huge climb up the ladder. Riding a seven game win streak helps. These are more like the Coyotes we expected to see this year.

8. Vancouver Canucks (12-7-3) (3): Special teams demon. Top ranked power play and fourth best PK. Many more wins to come.

9. Atlanta Thrashers (12-9-3) (19): Five game win streak vaults Atlanta into the top ten. Dustin Byfuglien has been a beast. Now if they can just get anyone to go watch this team.

10. Los Angeles Kings (13-9-0) (2): Only 3-6-0 in last nine games. Is it time to panic yet?

11. Boston Bruins (12-8-2) (7): Slight drop in the rankings for the B’s after a rough weekend.

12. Columbus Blue Jackets (14-8-0) (8): Swept in a home and home by the Red Wings puts a damper on an otherwise very solid beginning to the season. There is still a ton of positives going on in Columbus though.

13. Dallas Stars (13-8-1) (11): Very positive weekend, with a home and home sweep of the St. Louis Blues. Dallas keeps getting surprisingly good play throughout the roster.

14. Tampa Bay Lightning (13-8-2) (9): Up and down performances over the past couple of weeks. Even Steven Stamkos went scoreless for a pair of games, which I didn’t think was possible. Still a very fun team to watch though.

15. San Jose Sharks (11-7-4) (15): Speaking of inconsistent. The Sharks are the most inconsistent team in the league. So much for the outstanding regular seasons that San Jose is accustomed to. Any chance they still wish they had Evgeni Nabokov in net?

16. St. Louis Blues (12-7-3) (1): Only 3-7-2 in their last 12 after a near flawless start has sent the Blues plummeting down the ladder.

17. Colorado Avalanche (13-9-1) (17): Give them credit for battling this long through a wealth of injuries. If healthy, this is definitely a top ten team. Still no Craig Anderson in net and now MVP candidate Chris Stewart is out. Eventually the injuries could be too much to deal with for this young squad.

18. New York Rangers (14-10-1) (16): The Blue Shirts were cooled off by the red hot Penguins on Monday, but a home and home up coming with the Islanders can get them right back on track.

19. Minnesota Wild (11-9-2) (10): Just another in a long list of teams that have trouble putting solid efforts together on back to back nights.

20. Carolina Hurricanes (10-10-2) (21): Cam Ward is back to playing at a high level. Without him, the Canes wouldn’t have a chance most nights.

21. Anaheim Ducks (11-11-2) (20): Getting Joffrey Lupal back soon can only help an offense that has the potential to be pretty good.

22. Nashville Predators (9-8-5) (22): The workmen like effort has been their staple for years. It’s not going to be enough any longer. Eventually, the 28th ranked offense in the league has to find a way to put the puck in the net.

23. Florida Panthers (10-12-0) (24): Hockey is always good for odd stats. Here is one. Florida is 5th in the NHL in even strength goals yet their power play is dead last in the NHL.

24. Ottawa Senators (11-12-1) (13): A 4-6-0 stretch has put an end to their mini hot streak.

25. Buffalo Sabres (9-13-3) (26): The fact that the offense is so bad is mind boggling. The Sabres have way too much talent to be sitting at 25th in the league when it comes to scoring goals.

26. Calgary Flames (9-12-2) (23): Let’s see what there is to like about the Flames. Jarome Iginla is playing great and…… did I mention Jarome Iginla is playing great Not much else to like about Calgary right now.

27. New Jersey Devils (8-14-3) (30): The awful start is still stunning. Granted they’ve had injuries, but no one expected a horrible start like this. By the way, how’s that Iyla Kovalchuk contract working out?

28. Toronto Maple Leafs (8-11-3) (29): A friend of mine really thought this was a playoff team. He had to remind me of that after a 4-0-0 start. A 4-11-3 stretch has quieted him down quite a bit.

29. Edmonton Oilers (6-12-4) (28): Young team that was likely to see many bumps in the road all season.

30. New York Islanders (5-12-5) (27): The Isles broke their 14 game winless streak. No wins in 14 games. That’s very tough to do. They will likely start a new streak very soon.

For the past 3-4 seasons, we have been hearing the same thing when it comes to the NHL’s best players. The top three in the game have been considered Sidney Crosby, Alex Ovechkin, and Evgeni Malkin.

Thus the reasoning for why the Penguins will be good for years to come was that they have two of the top three players in the NHL.

That’s not true. In fact, nothing could be further from the truth.

The truth is that Malkin isn’t one of the top three players in the game. He actually might not even be in the Top 10. He definitely has the skills to be that player, but the pure facts of things are that no player in the NHL may have had a more disappointing calendar year then Malkin. Given the high expectations and the large $8 mil plus salary, it’s hard not to look at Malkin as nothing more then an underachiever.

Malkin came out of the gates strong during his rookie campaign of 2006-07 and then took the NHL by storm the following two seasons, putting his name right along side of Crosby’s and Ovechkin’s. Deservingly so I might add. He put the Penguins on his back and carried them for stretches during those post-seasons. Since that 2008-09 season though, Malkin has been a totally different player.

What’s the reason? How can a player so gifted drop from among the games elite to among the games good players. That’s a considerable drop off and there are plenty of factors.

First, has been his health. Malkin only played in 67 games a season ago and is already banged up this year. The injuries have effected his production as well. Last season, Malkin’s fourth in the league, he failed to hit the 30 goal mark for the first time in his career and finished the campaign with only 77 points.

Malkin was next to invisible down the stretch last season and parlayed that into a miserable post-season that saw the Penguins get bounced in the second round. He’s off to a miserable start to this season as well. In 15 games, Malkin has netted on 4 goals and 12 points.

Granted he’s had a hard time adjusting to being shifted between wing and his natural position of center. He, more then anyone on the Penguins roster, misses Jordan Staal the most. Staal has proved to be the glue of the Penguins team and can do a lot of the little things that Malkin is now being asked to do and simply either can’t do or doesn’t want to.

Without Staal, you can also make the case that Malkin isn’t playing with quality llinemates. That’s a built in excuse. Granted it would be nice to see him playing with better talent, but it’s not like he’s ever had all-star talent around him.

The main problem with Malkin’s game is that when he’s not scoring, he let’s it effect the rest of his game. While Malkin would never be considered among the games great defensive forwards, the lack of effort he often gives on the defensive end can be a bit disturbing. Way too often, Malkin is caught way out of position defensively and more times then not he’s chasing the play.

He had 100 penalty minutes a season ago, mostly from chasing the play and having to reach to get back in position. That hasn’t been an issue this season because more times then not, Malkin is no where to be found near the puck.

That’s what seperates Crosby from the likes of Malkin. When the puck isn’t going in for Crosby, he never takes a shift off and can do so many other things to help his team win. When Malkin isn’t going offensively, he can be next to invisible. Superstars don’t take shifts off, yet games at a time.

The most alarming number has been Malkin’s plus-minus the over the past two seasons which is currently a minus 11.

That could have a lot to do with Dan Bylsma’s wide open system. Malkin just doesn’t seem to know where he has to be most off the time. Moving him around from position to position, especially on the power play doesn’t help at all either.

Malkin was at his best under former head coach Michel Therrien’s structured system. While that system didn’t exactly work out for the team, it was great for Malkin, who was pretty much told where to be and what to do on every shift.

Whatever reason you buy into, Malkin is a huge part as the Penguins struggles over the past calender year. While the finger gets pointed most of the time at goaltender Marc-Andre Fleury (who hasn’t been good either), Malkin deserves all the criticism he gets.

Facts are if you want to get paid like a superstar and mentioned as a superstar, then you have to take the heat a superstar gets as well.

Is Malkin still one of the games best? He certainly should be, but at the moment he’s not. While he’s been struggling for over a year, he’s been passed up by the likes of Steven Stamkos, Jonathan Toews, Henrik Sedin and others.

Don’t even look at the numbers, just look at the effort. These guys give superstar effort all of the time. Malkin simply does not.

How does Malkin get back to being rightfully mentioned among the games greats? Effort and production, not only on a nightly basis, but a shift-by-shift basis is a good starting point. For him to be considered among the games top handful of players again, Malkin needs to finish the season on a tear and have a similar season next year. A good time for him to start would be Friday night when the Penguins host Stamkos and the Tampa Bay Lightning.

Until that happens, Malkin will continue to be passed up

1. St Louis Blues (9-1-2) (Last Weeks Ranking – 1): In the top spot for the second consecutive week. Seven straight wins for St Louis. I think the Jaroslav Halak trade is going to work out just fine.

2. Los Angeles Kings (10-3-0) (3): Four straight wins for the Kings. Goaltender Jonathan Quick is tied for the league lead in wins. Maybe because the Kings have only given up four goals in the last four games.

3. Vancouver Canucks (8-3-2) (16): The Sedin twins are heating up and so are the Canucks.

4. Washington Capitals (10-4-0) (6): Won 6 of 7. This team is just fine.

5. Philadelphia Flyers (9-4-2) (11): The whole lineup is contributing including goaltender Sergei Bobrovsky. Is goaltending suddenly a strength of the Flyers? If so. look out.

6. Detroit Red Wings (8-3-1) (2): Six wins in last eight games and getting production from all four lines.

7. Boston Bruins (7-3-1) (5): The Bruins have a major player injured in David Krejci. I know, you’re shocked. Tim Thomas also seemed a bit human this last week.

8. Columbus Blue Jackets (8-5-0) (15): Matthieu Garon has been great and the Jackets have won 7 of 10.

9. Tanpa Bay Lightning (7-4-2) (4): Steven Stamkos is on fire, leading the NHL with both 11 goals and 22 points, but Tampa went 1-2-1 on a West Coast road trip/

10. Minnesota Wild (7-4-2) (21): Just like Columbus, the Wild are exceeding expectations.

11. Dallas Stars (8-5-0) (14): Somehow the Stars offense ranks in the Top 5 in the NHL and they are getting quality play in net from Kari Lehtonen.

12. Montreal Canadiens (8-5-1) (10): Starting climb down in the rankings. The offense has hit a wall and they have the worst power play in the league.

13. Ottawa Senators (7-6-1) (27): Alexei Kovalev is hot and Jason Spezza’s return is a boost to a Sens team on a three game win streak.

14. Chiacago Blackhawks (8-8-0) (8): Another team sliding down in the rankings with six losses in their past nine.

15. San Jose Sharks (6-5-1) (7): Is there a more up and down team in the NHL?

16. New York Rangers (7-6-1) (18): The Blue Shirts have been playing well and Marian Gaborik is close to returning to the lineup.

17. Colorado Avalanche (7-5-1) (13): Best offense in the NHL, but they aren’t very good without goaltender Craig Anderson, slipping to 26th in the league in goals against.

18. Pittsburgh Penguins (7-7-1) (12): The Pens can’t find their groove. Injuries to their stars have really hurt, but they should be much better then a .500 team. Will the real Evgeni Malkin andMarc-Andre Fleury please stand up.

19. Atlanta Thrashers (6-5-3) (17): Dustin Byfuglien was a steal for the Thrashers who have gotten points in 6 of their last 7.

20. Anaheim Ducks (7-7-1) (26): Showing signs of life. Take a guess who is the second highest scoring defensemen in the NHL? If you said Lubomir Visnovsky(13 pts.) you are correct.

21. Carolina Hurricanes (7-7-0) (20): Jeff Skinner leads all rookies with 12 points.

22. Nashville Predators (5-5-3) (9): Five straight losses and eight out of 11 after that great start.

23. Calgary Flames (6-7-0) (19): Have only scored four goals in past three games and are on a four game skid.

24. Florida Panthers (5-7-0) (22): If they can improve their 28th ranked power play, they may win a few more games.

25. Phoenix Coyotes (4-5-4) (25): Haven’t won back to back games this year. Not having Shane Doan doesn’t help matters out.

26. Buffalo Sabres (4-9-2) (29): A dreadful 0-6-1 at home. Ryan Miller coming back may give them a spark.

27. New York Islanders (4-8-2) (24): Seven straight losses. It’s ugly on the Island.

28. Edmonton Oilers (4-6-2) (28): Only 2-6-2 in their last ten.

29. Toronto Maple Leafs (5-5-3) (23): A friend bet me before the season that the Leafs were a playoff team. He was talking a lot after their 4-0 start. It’s kind of funny I haven’t heard from him much during their current 1-5-3 stretch.

30. New Jersey Devils (4-10-1) (30): A second straight week in the cellar for the Devils. No home wins and a goal differential of -23, easily the worst in the NHL. Martin Brodeur is scheduled to come back this week. Maybe that gets the Devils going
